Meet the Expert: Adam Buffone
By Innomar Strategies
What is your role and what are your duties at Innomar Strategies?
As Director, Regulatory Affairs Consulting, I partner with pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, cosmetic, and natural health product companies to navigate Canada’s complex regulatory landscape. I provide strategic advice across the product lifecycle, including regulatory strategy, clinical trials, product licensing, submissions, Health Canada interactions, and lifecycle management, helping clients bring innovative products to the Canadian market efficiently and compliantly.
What is the best part of your job? What do you find fascinating about it?
The most rewarding part of my role is solving complex regulatory challenges. Every product and development program is different, and I enjoy working with clients to develop practical, science-based strategies that help transform innovative ideas into products that can ultimately benefit patients and consumers
What is your superpower? What is your expertise in the pharmaceutical field?
My greatest strength is understanding the regulatory process from every perspective. My career at Health Canada began in biologics lot release, where I worked within the testing and release program for a range of biologic products before moving into regulatory review, management, and executive leadership, ultimately serving as Associate Director within the Office of Clinical Trials. I also represented Canada as Deputy Topic Lead for ICH M11, contributing to the development of international clinical trial guidance. This unique combination of scientific, regulatory, and leadership experience enables me to develop practical regulatory strategies across pharmaceuticals, biologics, medical devices, cosmetics, and natural health products.
How do you foster a positive work environment within your team?
I believe the best outcomes come from collaboration, open communication, and mutual respect. I enjoy mentoring others, sharing knowledge, and creating an environment where people feel comfortable asking questions and contributing ideas. Strong relationships, both within our team and with our clients, are the foundation of successful projects.
How do you stay ahead of industry trends and collaborate with external partners?
Regulatory science is constantly evolving, so continuous learning is essential. I stay engaged through international regulatory initiatives, industry conferences, Health Canada guidance updates, and ongoing collaboration with regulators, industry partners, and professional organizations. I also enjoy presenting regulatory topics and sharing practical insights that help others navigate an increasingly complex regulatory environment.
What is the biggest problem you’re helping pharmaceutical manufacturers solve?
Many manufacturers face uncertainty when developing innovative products that don’t fit neatly within existing regulatory frameworks. I help clients navigate these regulatory grey areas, developing practical strategies and sequencing activities to position their programs for an efficient and successful regulatory review.
What do you do when you are not working?
Outside of work, you’ll usually find me at a cycling class, travelling, or planning my next adventure. I enjoy staying active, exploring new destinations, and spending time with family and friends.
